Can I have surgery with my local doctor?
A: The Kees Brenninkmeyer Foundation aims to provide alpine industry professionals with the same outstanding treatment that Kees received from the Steadman Clinic. If travel to the Steadman Clinic is impractical for international candidates or due to other restrictions, referred medical facilities and doctors will be considered on a case to case basis.
Can I apply even though I have current medical coverage?
A: Yes, you can submit an application. All expenses will be submitted through your existing coverage and the remaining balances would be covered by the foundation.
What’s the application process and determination of eligibility timeline?
A: When the application is complete, the review and determination of eligibility process will proceed. Since assessment and review are done on a case-by-case basis, the determination timeline will vary between candidates.
What’s the “Key Criteria” to qualify for financial assistance?
1. A potential candidate must have a career threatening injury.
2. Documentation supporting career and/or career intent within the guiding, patrolling, or instructing organization.
3. Medical expenses related to injury would present a considerable financial hardship.
Would surgical treatment be required in order for me to qualify?
A: Yes, potential candidates would require surgery in order to qualify.
If I had an elective surgery already, could I submit an application to cover the remainder of my bills?
A: No, paying existing medical bills from a previous elective surgery are outside the scope of the foundation.
Does the Kees Brenninkmeyer Foundation cover payments for emergency surgeries?
A: As of March 10, 2016, the foundation board will consider accepting applicants with emergency surgery cases. Please complete the pre-application form (http://www.keesbfoundation.org/apply/) to receive additional information and procedures specific to your emergency surgery case. Applications must be completed and submitted to the board for review 2 months from the date of your emergency surgery. With that being said, we recommend a prompt application submission since the Kees Brenninkmeyer Foundation will not reimburse any late fees associated to the medical expenses incurred during an emergency surgery.
What if my surgical needs are beyond what the Steadman Clinic can offer?
A: If the Steadman Clinic’s medical staff recommends a different facility then that procedure will be considered eligible for financial support by the Kees Brenninkmeyer Foundation and the application will be processed accordingly.
Do I need to be a current alpine guide, patroller, or instructor?
A: Yes, you must currently be working within either organization and have intent to return after the necessary surgical intervention.
If I’m determined eligible for financial assistance, would I qualify for another surgery related to a different injury?
A: No, determination of eligibility for financial assistance is injury and treatment specific. Another treatment related to a different injury would not fall under the same financial support.
Where does the Kees Brenninkmeyer Foundation extend their financial support?
A: The foundation will assist candidates worldwide within the alpine guiding, patrolling, or instructing organizations. The application process will not differ between locations.
Can I schedule surgery before I’m deemed eligible for financial assistance?
A: If you require financial assistance through the foundation, the application and determination process cannot be rushed due to a pending scheduled surgery. If time to assess career and financial impact cannot be provided, then your application will result in a denial of approval for assistance.
What’s the timeline for career return?
A: Trained medical staff will make all decisions regarding treatment, rehabilitation and career return. The Kees Brenninkmeyer Foundation does not have medical expertise to make decisions relating to career return and therefore rely on healthcare professionals for prescriptions and evaluation.
